I can’t believe that I agree 100% with Donald Trump in a statement he made today. Here it is:
““Why should the networks continue to get rich on the debates?” Trump told reporters at a news conference in Marshalltown. “Why do I have to make Fox rich?” (www.washingtonpost.com/...)
In a nutshell he just encapsulated a huge piece of exactly why our entire political system is in the mess that it is.
The news was never intended to be a place where companies got rich. Once you introduced the profit motive into the news room everything went down the tubes. Info-tainment is very fundamental to the absolute demise of our political conversation and is very much the root cause of the ability for the candidacy of Trump to exist in the first place.
The irony of Trump himself making this statement is so deep it’s hard to even get my head around. If Fox News weren’t in the business of making millions by making slanted, sensationalist news in the first place which they never should have been in the business of then many of these radicalized foaming-at-the-mouth voters who have the alternate universe of Fox News’s worldview very much at the base of the hatred which drives them to look for candidates like Donald Trump, then Donald Trump wouldn’t have the spotlight. In fact he wouldn’t even be a candidate. It’s almost like some time travel movie.
And yet for a moment he is out there making the exact case for why he shouldn’t exist in the first place. What a strange world we have come to live in.
Yes Donald, we should get money out of politics. No, Donald, I don’t think you really mean that.
